First Time in Curaçao

WHERE

Curaçao,

Dutch Antilles

WHEN

September 2017

Curaçao was a place that I had never heard of until I moved to Amsterdam and it was also my first place visited outside of Europe, my first long flight and I have to say: what a great choice it was!

This small island belongs to the Dutch Antille and it's really close to Venezuela, which also means it's a great place to be, even during huricane season, since this island is below the huricane belt.

Because Curaçao is such a small island and there are not a lot of public transportation, we decided that renting a car would be the best solution to explore the country.

Since we arrived in the afternoon, we didn't had time to explore much that day, so we decided to stay at our hotel, the Blue Bay Golf & Beach Resort. We stayed in this beautiful villa, with a swimming pool just in front of our living room and 5min walking to the beach (which is amazing and perfect for snorkeling).

One thing about Curaçao is that all the beaches are on the south and west side of the island, the east is pretty much wilderness and the north is wavy ocean and a lot of rocks. Also most of the beaches are private, which doesn't really give you a real experience, but if you are looking for locals you can find them in Klein and Grote Knip.

During our week there, we got to visit some amazing beaches such as Playa Porto Mari, Cas Abao, Jan Thiel, Playa Lagun and Grote Knip. Also during our exploring we passed in Sint Willibrordus, where you can watch flamingos (I heard the best time to watch them is during the morning/noon) and where you can find a inspired Hollywood sign. We also visited the Dolphin Academy Curaçao, where we got the chance to be in a pool with some dolphins.

Useful tip: Curaçao is an incredible place to snorkel (or dive) but to rent equipment can be expensive, so my advice is bring your own snorkel gear, it doesn't take that much space and you can save a lot of money that way.

Another stop you should add to your list is the capital Willemstad, aka colourful Amsterdam (legend says that the governor had sensitive eyes and got really bad headaches from the light reflected from the white buildings and so he ordered them to be painted and the result is pretty cool). The architecture is so interesting and the colours are mesmerizing.

Good to know: People from Curaçao are such sweethearts and I do have to say thank you to the staff from the Blue Bay Golf & Beach Resort because they were the best: they gave me a ride home on the first night, they made sure I had the best time. Also save a full day to go to Klein Curaçao, it's totally worthy (I will do a post about it later).

P.S.: Sorry for the photo quality, most of the photos were taken with my phone.

Safe travels :)
