Capri

A day trip

WHERE

Capri,

Italy

WHEN

August 2018

Capri is what dreams are made of, the pearl of Naples Bay, shaped like a woman (so they say), scenery for some of the most iconic Dolce & Gabbana commercials and vacation destination for some of the world most famous people.

This small island is 40min by boat from Naples, but you can also take the boat from Sorrento (25min) and from Naples there are several companies that do the transfer with schedules from the early morning until 8 or 9 PM and the prices are around 40€ (return ticket).

As soon as you get out of the ferry in Capri you will be bombarded with a lot of boat tours offers and there are two options here: you either take a tour with 20 (or sometimes even more) people and pay around 10€ or you rent a private boat and the amount to paid will be at least 10x more. Because we were just going to stay there for the day and we wanted to enjoy all of the island we decided to go for the boat tour (it was a small boat for maybe 20 people) for 1h around the island without entering the Grutta Azzura (I heard it's beautiful but during the high season you can wait more than 1h to get inside, since the cave is so small and the number of boats allowed in at the same time is limited).

The trip around the island is amazing and gave us a really nice and general perspective of the island. I have never seen such turquoise waters in my life, the tour showed us all the caves and natural monuments, like the arch, the Marina Piccola, the Faraglioni (legend says if you kiss your loved one when passing under, it will be eternal love), the Faro di Punta Carena, everything!

After the boat trip we decided to take the bus (you can get a day ticket, which is totally worth it and not expensive at all, the cable car had a never ending line and the taxis, tough they are super cute, they are also quite expensive) to Marina Piccola and relax at the beach. Most of the beaches in Capri are private, which means you have to rent a chair but in Marina Piccola there are two small public beaches and if you are lucky (and patient) enough you might get a place in the sand (again sand here means small rocks). The beach here has a beautiful view of the Faraglioni (those 3 big rocks, Capri's icon).

From Marina Piccola we took the bus to Capri center, where we tried some famous sweets at BuonoCuore and we made our way to via Krupp after our sugar levels were okay. At the time, via Krupp was closed but for 1€ you can enter Giardini di Augusto and see it from above.

Useful tip: There are a lot of public fountains where you can refill your water bottle for free.

After the Giardini, we took the bus again, this time to Anacapri (on the opposite side of the island, where most of the locals live), there the number of crowds in the street is lower and you can take the cable car (more of a chair, like when you go skiing) and go up the mountain to the highest point of Capri (it takes 13min, while hiking takes 1h)

Monte Solaro has one of the most amazing views not only of Capri and the Faraglioni but also of the other islands in the Bay, like Ischia and Procida and the Naples coast.

Keep in mind: there are almost no cars in Capri (I saw maybe 2 and the rest are taxis), the buses run almost all the time full (but they are also tiny with few seats) and walking can sometimes be dangerous, since the rouds are quite narrow and sometimes there are buses crossing (I saw a lady squeezing in against a wall so the buses could pass). I chose the bus and for me it was fine. There is also the option of renting a scooter.

Safe travels :)
